IATEFL Harrogate: Day 3

I was busy putting the last minute touches to my presentation for most of the day, so I won’t be commenting on other sessions today.

If you’re visiting here after having been to my session, here are some links to download the activities I presented.

Handout

This handout included a series of questions for participants to reflect on the activities presented.

1. ‘Blockbuster’ PowerPoint template

A good task for splitting the class into 2 competing groups. Easily adaptable.

2. ‘Jeopardy’ PowerPoint template

An effective way of organizing your vocab revision competition by textbook unit.

3. ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’ PowerPoint template

A very popular format that offers the student four different words to complete the sentence. I get each student to take turns answering, the rest of the class can be used as the audience, who can be consulted.

4. ‘Blankety Blank’ video clip

A nice activity that can involve everyone in the class in different roles. Also, there is no right / wrong answer, as the responses are merely what each person considers to be appropriate.

Thank you to the 30+ people who attended my session. I was very happy to get so much feedback about the activities, although I think I probably tried to fit too much into my session.

Thank you so much for putting together such a delightful session. Getting teachers to share ideas and experiences is always so interesting and so much fun….and the topic was the perfect end to a long day!! Well done on your blog too and thanks for sharing.

    • Thank you, Angie. I always try to avoid merely being the person at the front who delivers the information for others to ‘consume’, so it was great to receive so much input from everyone in the room.

When you have 30 to 40 people in a room, there are so many different experiences and I was so pleased that everyone was willing to contribute ideas on how to make the most of the activities I presented.

      Hi Adam,
I’ve only just found your site (through a link on your comment on S Thornbury’s blog) and the first thing I did was download your Jeopardy and Blockbusters templates. Fantastic, just what I’ve been looking for for years… thank you.
I think introducing the element of competition/quizzing like this is a very powerful motivational tool. I have an old jeopardy template, but it didn’t occur to me how to mark the questions already visited, so now I know I’ll change it and post that on my blog (eslteachertim.livejournal.com)… I’ll also provide a link to your site if you don’t mind???
I have designed a ‘Wheel of Fortune’ ppt style for starting conversations in small groups (Conversation ‘Wheel’), you can see it at http://www.englishcircles.com/lessons.html
      Thanks for the inspiration.

      Sorry Adam,
just realised when I finished the ppt that it’s basically identical to yours – I didn’t mean that, hope you understand.

Loved you presentation… my favourite of the whole conference. It was so nice for the audience to be able to participate so fully in the presentation. A lot of people would have tried to limit the amount of time that people got to speak but you let people give their ideas and it really led to a lot of sharing of ideas. Nice one.

    • I’ve added you to my blog list, Tim (I’m guessing the above relates to the comment I left on your blog). Keep up the good work.

Kieran, thank you for your kind words. I’ve subsequently learned that my approach (actively encouraging participation from the audience) wasn’t to everyone’s taste, but I’m genuinely pleased that you found the session so helpful.
