Learning styles… a load of rubbish?

This post contains links to a number of video clips discussing the notion of learning styles.

Can it really have been way back in March that the great Scott Thornbury posted about learning styles on his blog? Time really flies when you’re having fun. I started looking into it way back then, saved this as a draft post and promptly forgot all about it. The following video clips and links will hopefully at least provide food for thought in the debate.

First up, I found this video on TeacherTube. Entitled ‘Learning Styles Don’t Exist‘, you can probably guess the stance that it adopts. Next up, courtesy of YouTube, we have the evocatively titled ‘Learning Styles response‘. If you want something a little more descriptive and a little less judgmental, you might want to go for ‘Classroom Secrets – Learning about Learning Styles‘.

If you prefer reading to video clips, here is an article – which supports what I believe, if you really want to know – claiming to ‘debunk’ learning styles; apparently, being aware of learners’ preferred styles and adapting teaching to suit them doesn’t make any difference. If you want read the academic paper that it refers to, you can by clicking here: Learning styles – concepts and evidence.
